RIP: Mike Douglas

Mike Douglas, perhaps the most underrated TV interviewer in the history of the medium, died today at age 81. As a teen in the 1970s, I used to watch the show regularly because of the musical acts. I remember actually watching the interview below with Tom Waits when it first aired in 1976.

I realize this unrelated to the article, but I am really looking forward to your take on the August 11 terrorist arrests. It seems rather convenient that just as the TSA was removing stringent safety checks and positive public opinion of the war is at an all time low that a major event would occur.

Hi Ken,
I don't really have much of a take on the arrests in terms of the timing. I do think we are headed for a period in which airline travel becomes a mostly elite activity. Fuel costs, fear of terror, and actual terror will drive away most of the "average" population of flyers.
What I did find interesting about the arrests was the way in which the Bush administration used it as an opportunity to float the term "Islamic fascists" more strongly than they usually do. I think that term is going to be central in the fall elections.
