Cost of Spring yard clean up ad

The ad below will run twice in the Oshkosh Northwestern. For that privilege, Gannett collects $815 of taxpayer money.

is it not free to make that same announcement on the city website or cable access channel?

Even if a notice were sent out with a quarterly city newsletter or with your water bill, I suspect the cost would be substantially more.

I'm not quite sure what the intent of your post is. I get the feeling from your post that your problem is with Gannet's cost to run the notice.

Why not attach some responsibility for your cost concern to the city and request alternate, more cost effective ideas for giving residents additional notice?

The point is transparency and openness, which the Northwestern keeps insisting they are for. I think taxpayers have a right to know that in a one-newspaper monopoly town, it costs $815 to publish a 214 word ad twice.

You are right that we need to find more cost-effective ways to get city messages out. Last year at a council meeting and in this blog I did report the amount of taxpayer money spent on print advertising not required by statute. At the council meeting I requested that alternatives be investigated, but to my knowledge that has not happened yet.

Tony-

Put the request for an update/report on alternatives/costs on the meeting agenda.
